Dumais places fifth in three-meter event at FINA World Championships
Texas-Ex Troy Dumais secures his second top-five finish in as many events this week in Shanghai.

Troy Dumais claimed a fifth-place finish in the men's three-meter diving event Friday evening at the 2011 FINA World Championships.

The three-time U.S. Olympian took fifth place with 479.95 points. Dumais totaled a meet-best 91.80 points on his second dive, a forward two-and-a-half somersault with two twists.

China's He Chong won the gold with 554.30 points. Russia's Ilya Zakharov and Evegeny Kuznetsov claimed the silver and bronze medals with 508.95 points and 493.55 points, respectively.

Dumais will join current Texas divers Drew Livingston, Shelby Cullinan and Diana Wilcox next month at the U.S. National Championships.

Troy Dumais & Kristian Ipsen win at World Cup

Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen won the silver medal in the men’s synchronized 3-meter contest Thursday at the FINA Diving World Cup, the top international competition of the 2010 season.

Dumais and Ipsen scored 440.01 points to finish second to the Chinese team of Qin Kai and Luo Yutong, who won with 460.62 points. Ukraine’s Illya Kvasha and Oleks Prygorov, the 2008 Olympic bronze medalists, were third at 432.30.

Dumais and Ipsen moved from fourth to second with two solid dives in the final two rounds. Heading into the last round, Ukraine was in second place, with the United States three points back and Canada six points behind the U.S.

The Canadians scored 78 points on their last dive, so Dumais and Ipsen needed 72 points to be assured a spot on the podium. They came through with 87 points on their final dive, a reverse 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists. Kvasha and Prygorov followed with the same dive but could not match the U.S., giving Ipsen and Dumais the silver medal.

“It was a great contest. It was close, and everybody was diving well. We had fun and enjoyed ourselves,” said Dumais, who also won a silver medal with Ipsen at the 2009 World Championships.

News: Dumais not giving up on dream

Troy Dumais says he's just living in the moment. He won't commit to sticking around for the 2012 London Games. It's hard to see him stopping now, though. Not after he's won two more silver medals at the world championships.

At an age when most of his contemporaries have called it a career, the 29-year-old Dumais keeps pressing on, hurling his body off a diving board in hopes of finally fulfilling that ultimate goal — an Olympic gold.

He's now got four silvers in the world championships, the latest coming Thursday when he was runner-up to Olympic champion He Chong of China in the 3-meter springboard.

That doesn't erase the disappointment of failing to win a medal of any color at the Olympics, where he's 0-for-3. He missed out in Sydney, then Athens, then Beijing. Now, he'll have to hang around until he's 32 if he wants to make another run at gold.

"It doesn't make up for it, but it sets the tone," Dumais said of his performance in Rome, which also included a silver in 3-meter synchro. "You can't make up for something you lost. The only thing you can do is build on it. This is a building process. It's four years if I choose to go four years."

News: Dumais Wins Second Silver

Troy Dumais won his second silver medal of the 2009 FINA World Championships on Thursday, placing second to China’s He Chong in the men’s 3-meter finals.

Dumais scored 498.40 points to He’s 505.20. Canada’s Alexandre Despatie took the bronze with 490.30 points. Earlier in the week, Dumais paired with Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif.) for silver in synchronized 3-meter.

Dumais came up short of a medal at the 2008 Olympic Games, where he finished sixth, perhaps setting the tone for this year.

“It’s been a long year. After Beijing, it was tough. You set goals and you come up short. But it’s tough to see dreams go away,” said Dumais, who is competing in his sixth World Championships. “I have to give it to my coach, my teammates and USA Diving. They’ve supported me better than ever this year.”

His 3-meter medal continues the success the U.S. team has had in Rome. With two events still remaining, Team USA has won three silver medals. At the 2007 worlds, the U.S. won one medal -- a bronze on the final day of competition.

Dumais was in fourth place – seven points out of third – after four rounds but then turned in 94.50 points on his reverse 3 1/2 for the highest scoring dive of the fifth round to move to third. He finished with 87.50 points on his reverse twister, good enough to bump him up to second.

“I came here and did my job,” Dumais said. “I had set some goals, and I did it.”

News: 3m Diving Preliminaries

The 3m diving preliminaries were held this evening in Beijing. Troy, along with 28 other divers, competed in 6 rounds with the best 18 scoring men going through to the semi-finals. Troy came joint thirteenth scoring 448.40 points.

Troy's fellow American diver Chris Colwill came joint seventh, scoring 464.75 points. To view the results in full, go to the official website of the Beijing Olympics here.

Troy will be taking part in the 3m diving semi-finals tomorrow (19th August) at 10am Beijing time (UK - 3am, USA - 10pm). The finals take place on the same day at 8pm Beijing time (UK - 1pm, USA - 8am).

Last night the Beijing Olympics 2008 kicked off in spectacular style.

At the Beijing Olympics, Troy will be taking part in the 3m diving event. After years of hard work, Troy has never been fitter and this year hopes to take home a medal after finishing 4th at the Sydney Olympics and 6th at Athens.
